Pathways to Citizenship

MILITARY SERVICE &
U.S. CITIZENSHIP

American flag ceremony
Naturalization Ceremony

Military service is one of the most honored pathways to U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens who serve honorably may be eligible for expedited naturalization under Section 329 of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA).

Naturalization During Peacetime (INA § 328)

Legal permanent residents who have served at least one year on active duty may apply for naturalization with reduced physical presence requirements.

Expedited Naturalization During Hostilities (INA § 329)

Non-citizens who serve honorably during a designated period of hostilities may apply for citizenship immediately upon enlistment.

Green Card (LPR) Through Service

Certain military visa programs have allowed enlistment in exchange for lawful permanent residency. Speak with a recruiter for current program status.

Important: All immigration and naturalization benefits through the military are provided by the U.S. government at no cost to the service member. For official information visit uscis.gov.

VOICES FROM
THE FIELD

Joining the Army was the best decision of my life. I came in with nothing and left with a degree, a pension, and skills no college could have taught me.

As an immigrant, military service gave me the chance to earn my citizenship while giving back to the country that gave me a future. I'm proud to be an American Marine.

The Navy paid for my entire nursing degree. When I transitioned out, hospitals were lining up to hire me. Military service opens doors civilians can't even see.
